Ma uit dupa doua hdd-uri noi, probabil de 3TB fiecare. Vor fi puse in HTPC, deci vor fi up&running 24/7.
Am gasit asa:
Western Digital Red 3000GB SATA3 64MB 5400RPM - cica ar fi indicate pentru HTPC si rulare non-stop. Oare? Avantaj: 5400RPM, desi nu prea conteaza viteza, ca oricum zbarnaie si nu dorm cu sistemul in camera, plus garantie mai mare decat alte modele.
Toshiba 3000GB SATA3 64MB 7200RPM - nimic special
Seagate Baracuda - cu sau fara XT, iarasi nimic special.

Ar mai fi WD Black, aici chiar nu stiu daca merita diferenta de pret si nici daca intr-adevar RED-urile ar avea ceva in plus pentru HTPC dupa cum spune producatorul si aia nu e doar marketing.
Idei? Sugestii? Citind review-uri m-as orienta parca spre modele diferite, Toshiba si WD Red, macar poate pica unul singur in caz de ceva. Ideea ar fi sa iau doua identice ca spatiu, unul stocare si unul mirroring.
 
Trebuie musai sa stea in PC? Adica nu se poate sa fie intr-un enclosure USB 3.0, alimentat extern?

Da, vor sta in pc si accesate la nevoie, local sau remote.
 
Parca unele serii de Seagate-uri dadeau in primire destul de des.

WD Red + Toshiba pare combinatia castigatoare. WD Black e cu aproape 50% mai scump decat varianta Red. Ai 2 ani garantie in plus, dar diferenta e prea mare.
 
RED-urile erau facute sa functioneze fara probleme in RAID, avand TLER enabled din fabrica (la seriile noi de la WD nu se mai poate activa cu utilitarul WD mai vechi) - asta evita in principiu sa iti sara discurile din matrice fara sa fie busite cu adevarat.

Daca in respectivul HTPC nu folosesi RAID (si ma indoiesc profund ca vrei sa o faci) atunci orienteaza-te la cel mai ieftin, eventual din seria "video storage" gen Seagate SV35 sau similar.
 
Mai stie cineva care-s diferentele dintre HDD-urile "A/V" si cele normale? Producatorii nu mai zic nimic.
 
Din câte am înțeles eu (fără vreo documentație clară), au implementate niște funcții pentru ajutat la streaming, atât la citire cât și la scriere. Cea mai importantă e garantarea timpului de execuție pentru o operație (cam același lucru cu TLER, dar mai agresivă; la RED-uri TLER e activ doar la citire). Asta nu se face foarte complicat, cu cache-uri care să țină datele până reușesc scrierile, ci mult mai simplu: dacă operația durează mai mult decât normal (ex: nu poate să citească și ar trebui să mai încerce o dată) HDD-ul îți întoarce imediat datele pe care a putut să le citească, fără vreun mesaj de eroare, și continuă mai departe. Asta înseamnă că poți avea pierderi de date fără să-ți dai seama (tu vrei să scrii 010101010, el scrie 0101 și i se termină timpul, nu mai scrie și restul, trece la operația următoare fără să-ți dea eroare). La video chestia asta nu e extraordinar de gravă, pentru că îți apar doar ceva artefacte, dar dacă ții altceva pe hdd-ul ăla și-l folosești intensiv e posibil să intri în timeouts când citești/scrii orice.

Eu am două HDD-uri WD AV-GP, le-am folosit doar în RAID1 și n-am avut probleme până acum.

Power-on hours par legit, desi Seagate-ul ăla de 2TB pare mai vechi (l-am luat chiar înainte să crească preţurile - parcă a trecut mai mult de un an jumate de atunci). Calculatorul care le găzduieşte e up 24/7.
